The characteristics of solid-state preparation method are that the temperature during the preparation process is low,the metal matrix and the reinforcing material are in the solid state,which can inhibit the interfacial reaction between the metal and the reinforcing material.Metal matrix is usually in the form of powder or metal foil and reinforcing materials(fibers,whiskers,particles,etc.)are mixed and arranged together in a certain content,distribution and direction according to the design requirements in advance.After heating and pressurizing,the metal matrix is combined and bonded together to form composite materials.The processes of this kind of preparation mainly include powder metallurgy,hot pressing,hot isostatic pressing,rolling,drawing and so on.
1.Powder metallurgy
Powder metallurgy is one of the earliest methods used to fabricate metal matrix composites.As early as 1961,Koppenaal et al.used powder metallurgy to manufacture carbon/aluminum composites with a fiber volume fraction of 20%_40%,but due to the low performance and no effective measures to improve the performance,this method was mainly used to manufacture particle or whisker reinforced metal matrix composites.
Powder metallurgy is a mature process.On the one hand,the blank of composite material can be manufactured for extrusion,rolling,forging,spinning and other secondary processing to make parts.On the other hand,it can also be directly made into composite material parts with accurate size and shape,which can reduce the follow-up processing,great process flexibility and suitable for mass production.
Figure 3-1 shows the process flow of the powder metallurgy process.The process is suitable for manufacturing SiCp/Al,SiCw/Al,Al2 O3/Al,Ti82/Ti metal matrix composite parts,plates or ingots,etc.Commonly used reinforcing materials are:SiCP,SiCw,Al2O3,B4Cp particles,whiskers and staple fibers,etc.Common matrix metals are:Al,Cu,Ti,etc.In powder metallurgy,the alloy powder and the reinforced particles(whiskers)can be mixed in any proportion as required.In powder metallurgy,the content of particles(whiskers)is not limited and the size of particles can be selected in a wide range compared with the casting process.But the cost of materials is high,and it is difficult to make large parts and blanks.
